Programs

1
Can we call it Israeli cuisine?
Who made swiping hummus an everyday dish? When did roasted cauliflower enter the local kitchen? As Israeli chefs conquer the world’s restaurants and reinvent menus, we’ll see who they are and what they’re cooking and whether Israel’s fusion of European and Middle Eastern foods can finally be considered a cuisine of its own. (This talk can include a food demonstration.)
2
Sabra Cinema
With Israeli films available worldwide and many an Israeli TV show adapted for US networks (not always as successfully as "Homeland" and "In Treatment," we’ll take a look at clips of the works made in Israel and exported to the US, talking about what works, who makes it, and why certain Israeli films resonate so strongly for American audiences.
3
The Sound of Music
Israel is a small country, particularly when it comes to its musicians. There is more than one musical dynasty in the land, including the prolific Banai brothers and cousins, the spiritual Razel siblings, hip-hop’s A-Wa sisters and indie siblings, the Djamchid Sisters. We’ll listen to their work and discuss what siblinghood — and talent — brings to these particular streams of Sabra song.
4
The Israeli Runway
A look back and discussion of the development of the Israeli fashion industry and styles, from kibbutz wear, Gottex and Maskit to the local renaissance that began in the mid-1990s, when Israelis decided to make their own -- often monochromatic and conceptual -- rules about trends and styles.
5
Thanksgiving and the Immigrant Experience
My children's book, "Not This Turkey," describes an immigrant Jewish family's first Thanksgiving experience in New York City in the early 1950s. A book reading program involves a short discussion about immigrants and how people adjust to new countries. The discussion and book reading are appropriate for ages 5 through 7, and can involve a cooking demonstration for second and third graders.

Weekday/Sunday programs are approximately one hour. Shabbat Scholar-in-Residence usually includes two talks, sometimes three.

Usually: The event price includes honorarium and all expenses, including international and domestic airfare and local expenses. We ask venues to provide home-hospitality for one night (for weekday/Sunday programs), or two nights (for Shabbat programs), or for multi-day programs, one night for each day of the event. If your venue is unable to provide home hospitality, an additional charge of $150 per night will be assessed to cover speaker expenses.
