Programs

1
Anti-Israelism on Campus - Understanding It and Fighting It: Some Useful Strategies and Ideas
Jewish students, parents, and many other Jews are concerned about campus anti-Israelism. One way to explore this phenomenon and how to fight it is by examining the only novel on this topic, FIELDS OF EXILE (which won Best Novel, Canadian Jewish Literary Awards). Gold will present the different strategies and approaches used by the student in this book and discuss which are most effective, and why.
2
How to Write A Jewish Novel (And How Not To): Tips from a Prize-Winning Author and the Editor of Jewish Fiction .net
Many beginning writers trip themselves up by making some classic mistakes in the writing process. Gold will describe some of these pitfalls and how they can be easily avoided. She will also offer concrete suggestions to help writers enhance their creativity and produce their best possible work. Gold is the author of 3 books of fiction and twice the recipient of a Canadian Jewish Literary Award.
3
Jewish Women’s Writing from Around the World: 4 Stories From 4 Countries, Originally Written in 4 Different Languages
Half of the 300 works of fiction published in the online journal JEWISH FICTION .NET are fascinating stories by, and about, Jewish women. Gold will present 4 of her favorites (originally written in 4 languages) and will comment on what they tell us about the diversity of Jewish culture around the world, and in what ways the lives of Jewish women from various countries are both different and alike.
4
What Is Creativity, and How Can You Increase Your Own? Unblocking Creative Blocks and Making Jewish Art
The creative process is complex, and sometimes people get “stuck” while doing creative work. We’ll explore why, and also some strategies for becoming unblocked, using the case study of Eve in the novel THE DEAD MAN. What was blocking Eve? What freed her up to write music again? And what can we learn from this about the creative process and about our own capacities to be fully creative people?
5
Alternative Mikvehs: How Four Works of Fiction Portray the mikveh and the potential of the mikveh for Jewish women now
Four stories from the online literary journal JEWISH FICTION .NET portray the mikveh in different ways: sometimes positively, sometimes negatively, in some cases in traditional guise, and in others as a resource for Jewish women to use in new, untraditional ways. We will examine all these stories and portrayals and discuss the various possibilities that the mikveh offers to Jewish women today.

Dr. Nora Gold is a well-known author in our community and we were privileged to have her speak about her book THE DEAD MAN to our synagogue audience of about 130. She interacted very well with the audience, both during the talk and the Q&A that followed. As a speaker, she is very warm and accessible as well as intellectually stimulating.

— Nancy Machtinger, Coordinator Lunch & Learn Program, Beth Tikvah Synagogue, Toronto

Dr. Nora Gold’s Meet the Author event at the Miles Nadal JCC was just wonderful. Dr. Gold is an absolute pleasure to work with, and she is an engaging speaker. Her discussion about “The Dead Man” was very meaningful, striking powerful chords with our patrons. We received much positive feedback from our participants, and we look forward to welcoming her back to the Miles Nadal JCC in the future.

— Lisa Roy, Active 55+ Coordinator, Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, Toronto
