Programs

1
Renewing a Positive Judaism - Commandment, Connection, Community
In this session we talk about how to emphasize a positive Judaism that focuses on issues other than the political divide or arguments over Israel. How do we renew relationships to God and one another in our time? We will outline steps to rejuvenate both individual spiritual practices, and the creation of lasting and vibrant communities, while emphasizing commitment and connection.
2
"Trouble in the Family": Can We Ever Be One People?
It seems that Jews argue about everything, only briefly united by the simplest of imperatives, like "remember the Holocaust." What are the steps we can take to receive unlike opinions, and foster an atmosphere of mutual respect? Is common ground available, where each of us can hear the other and yet feel safe to maintain our own principles? How do we mend the rifts within our own communities?
3
Rosh Hashana and the Search for Meaning
Rosh Hashana teaches us that our time is finite and that we need to live with purpose-- a "calm urgency"--where what we did, and how we behaved, mattered to ourselves and those around us. What kinds of changes do we need to make—to our schedules; our goals; our relationships—in order to move in the direction of a fully meaningful existence? How can Judaism help us to achieve these priorities?
4
The High Holidays - Forgiving Difficult People
What should be our attitude towards people who hurt us? Should we always forgive? What if they do not apologize or the apology is insincere - should we proactively forgive them?? Does Judaism believe in second chances? What is the line between compassion and self-protection? We will address how one begins the work of forgiveness, not as an occasional piece of drama, but as a daily life skill.
5
Yom Kippur - Changing the Way We Speak to Others
The key prayers of Yom Kippur display an inordinate focus on how we communicate – the words we say; the gossip we spread; the tone we adapt, the body language we convey. The prayers are far more concerned with our words and intentions, than with any ritual sin such as not keeping kosher. How can we use this day to begin to improve our communication styles and connect better with others?
