Programs

1
It's YouTube, stupid! Or: How social media helps make peace
Traditional barriers between Jews and the Arab World, once upheld by traditional media channels, have been obliterated by social media, which prevents the silencing of independent voices across the Middle East. How do I harness the vast reach of Facebook and YouTube to help bring cultures closer?
2
The Pen and the Sword: Covering the Arab world from Israel
How did I, a religious Ashkenazi Jew from Jerusalem, come to study Arabic and become a journalist? How did I convince Syrian rebels and Islamist politicians from Cairo to Ramallah to talk politics with me? In this personal presentation, I share anecdotes from my work as an Arab Affairs reporter and discuss the challenges facing Israeli journalists in reporting on the Middle East.
3
Documenting the last "Arab Jews"
It's not just Holocaust survivors who will soon no longer be with us. A generation of Jewish Arabic-speakers is dying out with the disappearance of millennia-old communities from Yemen to Iraq to Morocco. Come hear how I preserve and document their language, heritage, and personal stories.
4
"People of the Book" vs. "Sons of Apes": Judaism in the Eyes of Islam
Islam, the youngest of the three monotheistic religions, carries significant "baggage" on Jews and Judaism. The Children of Israel are presented in the Koran as heroes who vanquished the tyrant Pharaoh, but the Jews of the Prophet Muhammad's era are portrayed quite negatively. This presentation will track the love-hate relationship of Muhammad and the Jews, revealing little-known traditions.
5
"Pure Monotheists" vs. "the Crazy Prophet": Islam in the Eyes of Judaism
Despite the hardships suffered by Jews under Islam, most Jewish decisors deemed Islam a pure monotheistic religion, setting it apart from Christianity. This presentation will examine the positions of central Jewish commentators on Islam and Muslims, from Moses Maimonides to Rabbi Ovadia Yossef.

Participants at Limmud Fest Sydney 2016 would have loved to be given more opportunities to hear Elhanan Miller speak. He was able to shed new light on the ever changing geopolitical machinations of the Arab world and his role as an Israeli covering the Palestinian beat. His intimate knowledge of the PA is enhanced by his language fluency. A pleasure to deal with before as well as at the event.

— Sharon Berger, Director , Limmud , Sydney, Australia
